The film, Wheels of Diversity in Art Therapy: Pioneers of Color, was completed in 2010. The documentary honors Georgette Powell, Cliff Joseph, Charles Anderson, and Lucille Venture as unsung architects of art therapy. It also recognizes contemporary art therapists who are enriching and advancing the field with respect to multiculturalism and social action.
Stella Stepney was appointed Chair of the Multicultural Committee in 2008. Stepney was instrumental in spearheading efforts to obtain official recognition from the Association for three pioneers of color. At the Association’s 2008 annual conference, Georgette Powell, Cliff Joseph, and Charles Anderson were honored for their outstanding service and contributions to the profession of art therapy. Powell received the Pioneer Award; Joseph received the Social Justice & Change Award; and Anderson received the Multicultural Leadership Award. Stepney’s focus was on Multicultural/Diversity Competence for art therapists. She advocated for the development of Multicultural Art Therapy Competencies designed to clarify the types of multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills art therapists need to acquire to work effectively with persons from diverse racial and cultural groups.
