Arts Interviews with Four Young Women

Author(s): Myra Levick, Ph.D., ATR-BC, HLMCarol Kunkle-Miller, Ph.D., ATR-BC, LPCRosemarie Hanna, Ph.D., RDT, LPCPopulation served: Individuals, Women Discipline: Art Therapy Type of film: Films Special topics: Theory

Two art therapists demonstrate three different approaches to working with young women. Dr. Myra Levick helps a client gain an understanding of how the drawing of a dream is reflective of her current life situation. In a first session, Carol Kunkle-Miller helps a client use a scribble drawing to gain insight into future goals and direction in her life. Dr. Kunkle-Miller then helps a client who has suffered a trauma understand how her feeling states reflect her current situation. With a second drawing, the client is helped to imagine a desired change and to recognize her ability to facilitate her wishes for her future. Drama therapist Rosemarie Perla uses the “empty chair technique” to help a client gain confidence in preparing for a difficult conversation with her partner.

All of the therapists help the four women to identify and address problems they are experiencing and gain insight into the issues involved as well as ways of confronting them.
