Integrating Focusing, Art, and Action Methods
Laury Rappaport, Ph.D., MFT, ATR-BC, REAT
This video recording provides an overview of Focusing-Oriented Arts Therapy (FOAT®) along with a 55-minute demonstration of a FOAT® session with a volunteer client.
Part I includes a brief history of the development of FOAT®; an overview of the foundational FOAT® principles along with its main approaches: Theme-Directed FOAT®; Clearing a Space with the Arts; and “Working on an Issue.”
In Part II you will observe Dr. Rappaport conduct a Focusing-Oriented Arts Therapy (FOAT®) session with a volunteer client. You will see how Focusing, compassionate listening and the expressive arts are interwoven to help the client to: identify an issue that she would like to work on; regulate feelings so they are safer to explore; access inner resources to work through current anxiety and underlying trauma; and access her inner wisdom to move forward in an empowered way.
In Part III, Dr. Rappaport offers the client a debriefing session (since she is a volunteer specifically for the demonstration). After, Dr. Rappaport reflects on the session, sharing her awareness and insights as to what led specific interventions. Dr. Rappaport also describes how this session reflects her 3-stage model of FOAT® as a Trauma-Informed Approach.
